Under God’s Covering: Safety in Surrendering
When we hear words like submission or surrender, many times we do not immediately see them as something good. Often, surrender feels like loss. We think of giving up our own will, our desires, our plans, or even the things our hearts have deeply longed for. In a world that encourages us to fight for control, submission can feel uncomfortable and even weak.
But submission to God is the very opposite of weakness. True surrender is not losing—it is positioning ourselves under the protection, wisdom, and guidance of a loving Father who sees far beyond what we can see. Submission places us in God’s perfect will for our lives. It allows Him to lead us in every area: our relationships, careers, health, decisions, emotions, spiritual growth, and overall well-being.
The safest place we can ever be is where God desires us to be.
Surrendering to God does not mean life will suddenly become easy or free from trials. It means that even in uncertainty, opposition, pain, or disappointment, we trust that God is still leading us. Under His covering there is peace, direction, protection, and purpose.
1. Submission Positions Us for God’s Will
Many times we want God’s blessings, but we struggle with yielding our hearts completely to Him. Yet God’s will is always greater than anything we could plan for ourselves.
In Book of Job 22:21-30, we are reminded of the blessings connected to returning to and agreeing with God:
“Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you.” — Job 22:21
When we submit to God, we invite His peace into our lives. Submission is not about losing our identity—it is about allowing God to align our lives with His purpose. Sometimes we want immediate answers, but God desires surrendered hearts before revealed directions.
Reflection
Are there areas in your life where you have been trying to maintain control instead of trusting God fully? What would it look like to surrender those areas to Him today?
2. Submission Gives Us Strength in Opposition
Joseph is a powerful example of surrender in the midst of pain and betrayal. God had a specific plan for Joseph’s life, yet the journey was filled with rejection, injustice, and suffering. His own brothers, jealous of the calling on his life, sold him into slavery.
Joseph had every reason to become bitter, angry, and resentful. Yet he chose to submit his pain to God instead of allowing pain to rule his heart. He trusted that God would bring him through.
Years later, Joseph became one of Pharaoh’s most trusted officials during a severe famine. The very brothers who betrayed him eventually came before him seeking food and help—without even realizing who he was. Instead of revenge, Joseph extended mercy, provision, and grace.
Joseph’s surrendered heart positioned him for victory.
This reflects the truth found in 1 Peter 5:6:
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.”
Reflection
Submission does not mean people will always treat us fairly. But when we surrender our hurt to God instead of feeding bitterness, God can heal us, elevate us, and use our lives for His glory.
3. Submission Helps Us Make Godly Decisions
Every day we are faced with choices. We can follow our flesh, emotions, and personal desires, or we can seek God’s direction.
Romans 8:7 reminds us:
“The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.”
Our flesh often wants immediate satisfaction, control, revenge, comfort, or recognition. But the Spirit of God leads us differently. Submission requires us to pause, pray, seek wisdom, and trust God even when His direction stretches us.
There are moments when God’s instructions may not make sense right away. Yet obedience rooted in surrender always leads us closer to His purpose.
Reflection
Before making major decisions, do you invite God into the process? Submission often begins with simply asking, “Lord, what do You want for my life?”
4. Jesus Is Our Greatest Example of Surrender
The ultimate example of humility and submission is Jesus Christ.
Philippians 2:3-8 teaches us that Jesus humbled Himself and became obedient even unto death on the cross. Though He was fully divine, He chose surrender and obedience to fulfill the Father’s will.
Jesus showed us that surrender is not weakness—it is strength under God’s authority.
Reflection
If Jesus was willing to humble Himself and submit to the Father’s plan, how much more should we trust God with our own lives?
5. God Welcomes Us Back When We Have Drifted
Sometimes we look back over our lives and realize there were seasons when we followed our own understanding instead of submitting to God’s direction. We may question past choices, relationships, decisions, or paths we took.
But the beauty of God’s love is that He never stops calling us back to Him.
Like the prodigal son, when we return with humbled hearts, God welcomes us with open arms. He is not standing with condemnation; He is waiting with mercy, restoration, and grace.
God knows we are not perfect. He knows there will be times when our flesh speaks louder than His Word. Yet He honors a willing heart that turns back toward Him.
Submission is not about perfection—it is about surrender.
Reflection
No matter where you are today, you can submit your life to God again. His grace is still available, and His covering is still extended toward you.
Closing Thoughts
Living under God’s covering begins with surrender. It is a daily choice to trust Him more than we trust ourselves. Submission does not remove every challenge from our lives, but it places us in the hands of the One who knows the end from the beginning.
God’s plans for us are greater than anything we could create on our own. Even when life feels uncertain, painful, or confusing, surrender keeps us connected to His wisdom, protection, and peace.
Today, God is not asking for perfection. He is asking for your heart.
The safest place we can ever be is under God’s covering.
