The Promises of God: Embracing Our Kingdom Inheritance
Imagine receiving notice that a distant relative left you a substantial inheritance. The wealth is legally yours, but there is one problem—you never read the will. Because you don't know what has been left to you, you never claim it, never use it, and never benefit from it.
Many believers live this way spiritually.
God has provided an incredible inheritance for His children through His Word. Yet if we never open the Bible, study it, and discover what belongs to us, we may live far beneath what God intended. The promises, wisdom, guidance, strength, peace, healing, and hope He has made available remain largely unexplored.
From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible reveals God's heart, His character, and His will for our lives. It is more than a collection of stories—it is a living guide that shows us what God has already provided for His people and how we can walk in relationship with Him.
As children of God, we have been given a Kingdom inheritance. The question is: Do we know what belongs to us?
1. God's Word Reveals Our Inheritance
Scripture
"And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise." (Galatians 3:29)
An inheritance cannot be claimed if it is unknown. In the same way, many Christians are unaware of the promises God has already provided through Christ.
The Bible reveals that we are heirs of God's promises. Within its pages, we discover God's provision, wisdom, peace, forgiveness, strength, guidance, and eternal hope. When we read Scripture, we begin to understand what belongs to us as members of God's family.
Throughout the Bible, we see God delivering His people from impossible situations, providing for them in seasons of lack, healing diseases, restoring losses, and protecting them through danger. These accounts were not merely recorded as history lessons; they reveal God's nature and demonstrate His faithfulness.
Reflection
What promises of God have you overlooked simply because you have not spent time discovering them in His Word?
2. The Bible Was Written to Help Us Today
Scripture
"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." (2 Timothy 3:16)
The Bible is not outdated. It was inspired by God and remains relevant to every generation.
The Israelites faced battles, uncertainty, financial challenges, leadership struggles, and personal failures. Yet through every situation, God revealed His wisdom and faithfulness. Today, we face many of the same challenges in different forms—relationship struggles, health concerns, financial pressures, difficult decisions, disappointments, and seasons of waiting.
God's Word provides wisdom and direction for each of these situations. It equips us not only to survive but to thrive.
When we read Scripture, we are not simply learning about what God did; we are discovering who God is and how He desires to work in our lives today.
Reflection
What current challenge in your life needs God's wisdom and perspective rather than your own understanding?
3. Faith Grows When We Know God's Promises
Scripture
"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Romans 10:17)
Scripture
"Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." (Mark 11:24)
Many believers quote, "All things are possible to him who believes" (Mark 9:23). Yet what are we believing for?
Faith is not wishful thinking. Biblical faith is confidence in what God has said.
If we do not know God's promises, we cannot confidently believe Him for them. The Word of God provides the foundation upon which faith is built. As we read, meditate on, and apply Scripture, our confidence in God's ability and willingness grows.
The promises of God give direction to our prayers and strengthen our expectations. We begin to align our thinking with His will rather than our fears.
Reflection
Are your prayers based on God's promises, or are they primarily based on your circumstances?
4. God's Word Is a Weapon and a Source of Victory
Scripture
"Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." (Ephesians 6:17)
When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He responded to every attack of the enemy with Scripture. He did not argue, reason, or debate. He declared God's Word.
The enemy still works through deception, fear, doubt, discouragement, and lies. God's Word gives us truth to stand on when challenges arise.
However, a sword is only useful if we know how to use it.
A Bible sitting unopened on a shelf cannot strengthen our faith, renew our minds, or help us resist the enemy. We must read it, meditate on it, speak it, and apply it to our lives.
The power of Scripture becomes active in our lives when we believe it and walk in obedience to it.
Reflection
What lie, fear, or struggle do you need to confront with God's truth today?
5. God's Word Continues to Speak Through Every Season
Scripture
"For the word of God is living and active..." (Hebrews 4:12)
One of the most amazing things about Scripture is that it continues to speak to us throughout our lives.
A verse that encouraged us during one season may reveal an entirely new truth years later. As we mature spiritually and face different challenges, God uses His Word to guide us in fresh ways.
Many of us have owned a Bible for years and may have read portions of it multiple times. Yet God's Word remains alive and active, continually revealing His wisdom and purpose.
No matter our age or stage of life, there is always more to discover about God's promises and our Kingdom inheritance.
Reflection
Has God been highlighting a particular Scripture or theme in your life recently? What might He be trying to teach you through it?
6. God's Word Reveals What We Cannot See on Our Own
Scripture
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword... and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12)
There are things about ourselves that we cannot see clearly.
We may overlook unhealthy attitudes, hidden fears, pride, unforgiveness, wrong motivations, or areas where God desires growth. God's Word shines light into places we would otherwise miss.
At the same time, Scripture reveals our strengths, gifts, calling, and identity in Christ. It not only corrects us—it transforms us.
As we spend time in God's presence and His Word, He shapes our character and aligns our hearts with His purposes.
Reflection
What area of your life might God be inviting you to surrender, strengthen, or transform?
Closing
Walking with God is essential for navigating the challenges and opportunities of life. We need His guidance in our relationships, finances, careers, health, decisions, purpose, and personal growth. More importantly, we need His presence.
The Bible is God's revealed will for His people. It is His love letter, instruction manual, and roadmap for abundant living. Within its pages are promises waiting to be discovered, truths waiting to be embraced, and wisdom waiting to be applied.
As heirs of God's Kingdom, we have been given an incredible inheritance. But like any inheritance, we must know it exists before we can walk in it.
This week, commit to spending intentional time in God's Word. Ask Him to reveal the promises He wants you to embrace in this season. You may discover that what you have been searching for has been waiting for you in His Word all along.
