“I Had a Plan… But God Had Better”
We all come into life with plans. Plans for love, for family, for stability, for success. We imagine timelines—“by this age I’ll be married,” “by this season I’ll be settled,” “by this point I’ll have arrived.” And there’s nothing wrong with planning—it's part of being human.
But somewhere along the journey, many of us have faced a moment where life didn’t unfold the way we expected. Doors didn’t open when we thought they would. Relationships didn’t last. Opportunities shifted. And suddenly, the plan we were so sure about… no longer fits.
That’s where this truth meets us:
God never asked us to figure it all out—He asked us to trust Him with it.
1: God’s Plan Is Intentional—Even When It’s Different
Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that God has plans to prosper us, not harm us, to give us hope and a future.
What we often miss is this: God’s plan isn’t just good—it’s intentional. It’s not random. It’s not reactionary. It’s designed with purpose, timing, and divine alignment.
We create plans based on what we can see.
God creates plans based on what He knows.
So when our plans fall apart, it doesn’t mean God’s plan failed—it means it’s unfolding.
Reflection:
What area of your life have you been holding onto your version of “how it should go”? Can you begin to trust that God’s version may look different—but is better?
2: You Were Created for His Glory, Not Just Your Goals
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reminds us that we are not our own—we were bought at a price.
Revelation 4:11 tells us we were created for His pleasure and purpose.
That shifts everything.
Because if our lives are meant to glorify God, then our plans must be surrendered to Him. Otherwise, we risk building a life that looks good—but isn’t aligned.
It’s not that your desires are wrong—it’s that they must be submitted.
Reflection:
Are your current plans centered on what you want—or on what brings God glory through your life?
3: It’s Never Too Late to Realign
Some may feel: “I’ve already made so many decisions without God… I’m too far in.”
But God doesn’t operate on expiration dates.
Isaiah 43:19 says He is doing a new thing—making a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
Even if your past plans led you somewhere unexpected… God can still redirect, restore, and renew.
Nothing is wasted in His hands.
Reflection:
What would it look like for you to “switch gears” today? What is one step you can take to invite God into your decisions moving forward?
4: Trust Requires Letting Go of Control
Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding.
That’s the hard part—because we want to understand.
We want clarity before obedience.
We want answers before surrender.
But God asks for trust first.
Trust means saying:
“Even if I don’t see it, I believe You’re leading me.”
Reflection:
Where in your life are you trying to figure everything out instead of trusting God to guide you?
5: God Goes Before You to Prepare the Way
Isaiah 45:2-3 shows us that God goes before us—breaking barriers and making crooked places straight.
Isaiah 40:4 reminds us He levels valleys and mountains.
That means you are not walking into your future alone—God is already there.
He’s already:
Removing obstacles
Opening doors
Rearranging what no longer serves you
Even when it feels uncertain, it is prepared.
Reflection:
What fear about your future do you need to release, knowing God has already gone ahead of you?
Closing Thoughts
“I had a plan… but God had better.”
That’s not a statement of loss—it’s a declaration of trust.
Because when we surrender our plans:
We trade pressure for peace
Control for clarity
Fear for faith
God’s plan may not always be comfortable—but it is always purposeful.
So today, the invitation is simple:
Lay your plans down.
Not because they don’t matter—
but because His matters more.
And when you trust Him fully, you’ll discover something powerful:
You didn’t miss your life…
You were being redirected into it.
